I love chocolate and I love wine, and you know the saying: “You cannot live on wine alone, add some chocolate”? Well, it’s great advice to live by.
Groot Constantia offer an amazing Chocolate and Wine Pairing at their tasting rooms and is a great way to spend an afternoon with your sweetheart or close friend. I brought my friend, whom I haven’t seen in a couple of months, to Groot Constantia for a nice catch up on a cold wintery day.
It was perfect! We spend about 2 and a half hours sipping, tasting and chatting.
First up was the Groot Constantia Sauvignon Blanc with Tropical Guava White Chocolate. The creamy white chocolate lifts the tropical guava, papaya and hints of granadilla bouquet in the wine. It was a very summery combination and was very clean on the palate, which was very invigoratingly fresh and fruity.
Second pairing was the Groot Constantia Chardonnay with White Lime and Apricot Chocolate. The Chardonnay was just wonderful and fresh. The zesty lime nose on the chocolate lifts the elegant Chardonnay.
The third pairing and my favourite was the Groot Constantia Pinotage with Blackberry Milk Chocolate. This combination was a blissful marriage of seductive flavours to devour at your leisure. I loved that the chocolate complements the fruitiness, adding indulgent complexity.
The fourth pairing was Groot Constantia Shiraz with Secret Spices and Vanilla Chocolate. I could taste cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in this spice combination and the Shiraz opens with a breath of fresh fruit.
The final pairing was with the Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve with Morello Cherry Tobacco Dark Chocolate. The intence black cherry, plums and blackcurrant harmonize perfectly with the notes of subtle dark chocolate, wet wood and tobacco in the wine.
This was an extraordinary experience in indulging in life’s great pleasures: friends, chocolate and wine! A must do when visiting Groot Constantia.
The Chocolate and Wine pairing is R80 per person and you will receive 5 chocolates paired with 5 Groot Constantia wines.
After all of this indulgence, we were treated to a taste of the #GrandConstance, which is the #OldestWineOfSouthAfrica. I have never tasted anything so gorgeous and I immediately fell in love.
The Chocolate and Wine pairing is perfect as an add on to lunch at one of the estates celebrated restaurants. Have lunch at Simon’s Restaurant or Jonkershuis and then take a leisurely walk through the beautiful oak trees to the tasting room for an amazing pairing experience.
