In Sometimes it takes science to make magic I shared the story of how Groot Constantia's winemaker, Boela Gerber, settled on the formula for making the Grand Constance wine of today.
To honour the 'Constantia Wyn' legacy, the Grand Constance would be presented in a bottle that was as historically accurate as possible. "Jean [Naudé, CEO of the Groot Constantia] and I were both curious and hands on," explained Boela. "It took us quite a few years... at least five years." As he related their journey to find the right size and shape, I realised that this chapter of the Grand Constance story was a puzzle with pieces scattered all over the world.

It was a cold and wet winter’s day when we headed out to Groot Constantia for a visit with winemaker, Boela Gerber and marketing manager, Grant Newton. We sat sheltered in the newly refurbished Cloete Cellar, and as I looked out at the much needed rain, I decided it wasn’t a bad way to hide out from the weather. Although, rain or shine, any conditions would be fine for a tasting at Groot Constantia.
I have toured Groot Constantia's production cellar a number of times over the years, but on this particular day I found myself making my way into a part of the cellar that is not in the usual tour. I was there to chat to wine maker, Boela Gerber, about the award-winning Grand Constance.
In an exciting move for wine connoisseurs and collectors, Groot Constantia are releasing highly limited quantities of the last of their award-winning vintages produced over the past decade. Read more about it in the press release here.
Walking towards Jonkershuis Restaurant at Groot Constantia evokes images of scenes in art films where extended families and groups of friends gather around long tables laden with food and where sensory feasts are had under clumps of trees.
