Groot Constantia’s 2015 Gouverneurs Reserve White blend was declared the National Winner in the Top White Blend Category at the recent 2017 Novare SA Terroir Awards.
In addition to this, Groot Constantia cleaned up in the Area Winner Awards category for the Constantia, Hout Bay and Cape Point Terroir Districts – taking home all the awards including: Top Cabernet Sauvignon(Groot Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon 2015); Top Merlot (Groot Constantia Merlot 2014); Top White Blend (Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve White 2015); Top Chardonnay (Groot Constantia Chardonnay 2016); Top Pinotage (Groot Constantia Pinotage 2015) and Top Natural Sweet (Groot Constantia Grand Constance 2014).
The Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards honour the wines which portray South Africa’s different wine growing areas. With the concept of “terroir” being popular among wine aficionados, the idea behind the Novare SA Terroir Awards is to discover wines that best represent the terroir in which they are produced.
Groot Constantia entered their third National Winner in a row this year, and each year the winner has been a different cultivar or style. Previous years saw the estate’s Merlot and Pinotage walk away with the award – displaying Groot Constantia’s overall variety of award winning quality styles and cultivars.
Floricius Beukes, Viticulturist and Estate Manager for Groot Constantia says that the estate is blessed with diverse vineyard sites and that this combination of different terroirs on one estate accommodates the production of a diverse range of award winning wines.
“We are truly delighted to win the National trophy for Top White Blend. The combination of a great team in the vineyard and unique terroir, with our minimum intervention approach to wine making, has proved to be very successful at the Novare SA Terroir Awards,” says Boela Gerber, Groot Constantia’s winemaker.

Well-deserved accolades
With an uninterrupted record of wine production since its inception in 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine producing estate. 332 years and going strong – Groot Constantia’s wines continue to rake in the awards.
Most recently Groot Constantia’s Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinotage and Gouverneurs Reserve White blend all achieved Platinum awards and were named amongst the top South African wines in the 2017 South African Wine Index’s (SAWi) Grand Wines Collection awards. In addition to this Groot Constantia’s Grand Constance was awarded a Gold Medal and a position in the list of Top 10 Muscats in the world at the The 17th annual Muscats du Monde wine competition which took place recently in France.
“Groot Constantia is an amazingly versatile property. This fact is being confirmed by our latest awards covering six different cultivars. To have a National winner on top of that is a further bonus,” says Jean Naudé, General Manager of Groot Constantia.
