Groot Constantia walked away with a phenomenal ten top awards at this year’s prestigious Top 100 SA Wines awards, including three Double Platinum Awards, four Double Gold Awards, two Double Silvers and joint first place overall for the Wine Consistency Award.
The three Double Platinum Groot Constantia wines, and Top 100 Wines winners, are the Shiraz 2016, Gouverneurs Reserve Red 2016 and the Grand Constance 2016. The four Double Gold winners are the Merlot 2016, Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Sauvignon Blanc 2018, and Chardonnay 2018. The two Double Silvers were awarded to Groot Constantia’s Gouverneurs Reserve White 2016 and the Pinotage 2017. Furthermore Groot Constantia’s Grand Constance 2016 shared a joint first place in the Wine Consistency Awards for 2015 – 2019. These are exceptional results in a field of 600 competing wines – a record amount of entries for the SA Top 100 Wine Competition since inception.
“Our wines continue to move from strength to strength in the international arena – having collectively won well over 100 gold awards from wine competitions held across the globe in the past few years alone,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. “Winning three Double Platinum Awards – the highest accolade possible – further displays, and confirms, the Estates overall variety of exceptional quality cultivars.”
The Top 100 wine team has arguably one of the best possible panel of high profile, well-respected wine judges. Local entrepreneur Robin von Holdt founded the Top 100 SA Wines competition in 2010 to highlight the excellence of South African wines while providing an authoritative reference point for wine lovers internationally.
Boela Gerber, wine maker for Groot Constantia, says that the wine-making team are particularly pleased and proud of these latest achievements by the Grand Constance – a wine that is a very important part of Groot Constantia’s history as the birthplace of the sweet wines of Constantia. “Over the centuries this farm has continued to produce high quality wines respected throughout the world, and winning the Wine Consistency Award is an excellent recognition of our teams continuous drive to maintain this quality across the board.”
Year-on-Year Increase In Accolades
When the SA Top 100 Wine Show started nine years ago Groot Constantia had one wine under the Top 100. This has increased year on year, and now in 2019 the Estate is celebrating an impressive ten winners. Taking into account the fact that the number of entries increases year-on-year, becoming a Top 100 winner is getting tougher every year.
“Each year Groot Constantia takes home more accolades from the Top 100 SA Wines awards than the year prior. In 2018 the estate won seven top awards, now in 2019 this total has increased to ten,” says Floricius Beukes, Viticulturist and Estate Manage for Groot Constantia. “Groot Constantia is an amazingly versatile property with diverse terroirs. Great variation in altitude, slopes and soil types on the Estate gives us the ability to produce world class wines over a range of varieties and styles. This fact is being confirmed by the number of awards won in the 2019 Top 100 Wine Challenge.”
