Platter’s South African Wine Guide, annually one of the most eagerly anticipated listings of top-performing wines, has awarded three of Groot Constantia’s flagship wines with 5 stars – honouring them as “South African Classics”.
Now in its 42nd edition, the Platter’s South African Wine Guide has bestowed Groot Constantia’s Gouverneurs Reserve White 2018, the Gouverneurs Reserve Red 2018, and the Groot Constantia Chardonnay 2019 with the highest possible accolade. To achieve 5 stars wines must score 95 points or higher out of a possible 100.
Groot Constantia’s Merlot 2018, Pinotage 2019, Shiraz 2018, Lady of Abundance 2018, Sauvignon Blanc 2020, and Grand Constance 2017 all also achieved high scores in the guide with 4.5 stars and are rated as “Outstanding” by this iconic wine guide – easily the most renowned and most competent wine directory internationally for South African wines.
These latest awards follow closely on the heels of the Veritas awards, where Groot Constantia’s Chardonnay 2019 and Sauvignon Blanc 2020 both achieved Double Gold Medals, while the Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 won a Gold Medal. Yet more wonderful accolades for South Africa’s oldest wine producing farm, which has been uninterruptedly producing wine for 336 years this year.
“The hard work of our wine-making team has paid off in outstanding wines being consistently produced on the estate,” says Boela Gerber, wine maker for Groot Constantia. “We pride ourselves in our quality across our range of wines and are excited that the results from a reputable guide like Platter have once again confirmed our consistency. It is great to get acknowledgement for all the hard work that has gone into the vineyards over the years.”
“Exceptional and consistent quality is our aim and motto, and it is in line with the vision of our founder, Simon van der Stel, who placed huge value in consistency, and it is therefore named as one of the reasons that he called his farm Constantia,” explains Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia.
“We could not have gone into the festive season with a better start – with our wines just recently achieving a string of awards at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards, in addition to the Veritas awards, and now featuring so prominently in the 2022 Platter wine guide, which so many people use as their guide to buying the best wines in South Africa,” concludes Naudé.
