Groot Constantia’s 2013 Merlot, 2012 Grand Constance, 2013 Shiraz and 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon all received awards at the recent 2015 Novare SA Terroir Awards.
The Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards honours the wines which portray South Africa’s different wine growing areas. With the concept of “terroir” being popular among wine aficionados, the idea behind the Novare SA Terroir Awards is to discover wines that best represent the terroir in which they are produced.
According to Boela Gerber, Groot Constantia’s awarded winemaker, central to the success of Groot Constantia is its terroir, enabling it to consistently produce wines of impressive quality over the years. “People and their influences come and go but the terroir has remained the same and has allowed Groot Constantia to produce wine of exceptional quality over centuries, even though major changes in wine styles have been introduced over time.”
Groot Constantia Viticulturist Floricius Beukes says the terroir at Groot Constantia, coupled with the unique climate of the Constantia region has allowed for the successes of the wines. “The summer breezes from the Atlantic Ocean have a big impact on our vineyards, keeping them healthy and retaining the amazing fruit character.”
A summary of the Novare Awards

Well-deserved accolades
With an uninterrupted record of wine production since its inception in 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine producing estate. 330 years and going strong – Groot Constantia’s wines continue to rake in the awards with the estate having now won a total of 93 top accolades since 2003 – 22 over the last 12 months alone.
In fact, Groot Constantia’s 2012 Grand Constance wine is no stranger to success, having recently achieved a Grand Gold award at the 2015 Monde Selection International Wine Contest.
These latest Novare Terroir SA awards comes close on the back of top honours achieved at the 2015 Taj Awards; the 2015 Syrah-du-Monde awards; the Shiraz SA Wine Challenge; the 2015 Monde Selection International Wine Contest and the annual Chardonnay du Monde competition.
“We are very excited and pleased to have won these awards at the 10th annual Novare SA Terroir Awards,” says Grant Newton, Marketing and Sales Manager for Groot Constantia. “These latest accolades prove how well suited the Constantia Valley Terroir is to the success of not only the Merlot grape – a variety that is sensitive to its environment and does not tolerate water or heat stress well but also the Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and sweet wine varieties.”
