What a night, Groot Constantia in the evening is spectacular.To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Napoleon, Groot Constantia launched the Wine of Exile exhibition at a gala event at Groot Constantia on 21st February 2019.
Groot Constantia’s 2017 Chardonnay proudly represented South Africa as one of only two Chardonnays from the country to feature in the top 10 and to receive a Gold medal at the recent Chardonnay du Monde® awards. 35 countries competed in the international 2019 Chardonnay du Monde® competition.
Did you know? Both black and white grapes are the same bright green colour before ripening. Most grapes are harvested in autumn however the preparation of the annual harvest season begins at the culmination of summer. Every grape varietal is harvested at a certain time of day and optimal temperature to achieve the best quality for our wines. Harvesting in this manner is required, especially in our ever changing climate.
A selection of historical wine artifacts are on exhibit at Groot Constantia until 21 June and visitors are being offered a rare chance to view these relics, which unveil the history of the wine that Napoleon drank while on exile on St Helena Island.
Saturday 23 February marks “Open That Bottle Night”. This one night in February has been immeasurably brightened for wine-lovers by the creation of a special day to celebrate a good bottle of wine.
The viticulturist Prof Piet Goussard was honoured with the iconic 1659 medal of honour on Thursday 7 February 2019 at the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event at the historic Groot Constantia Estate.
